NORTH LONDON SAILING ASSOCIATION at
Brightlingsea
The NLSA and its predecessor, the Haringay Sailing Association,
have sailed dinghies from Brightlingsea since the 1970s. On the departure of the Ocean
Youth Club in 1982 the Association purchased the Old Custom House at 126 Sydney Street
(close to the Hard). Refurbished with the aid of the Foundation for Sport and the Arts,
and with the a new dinghy fleet (owned by the North London Youth Sailing Trust) courtesy
of a Lottery grant, the base now provides facilities for residential courses and informal
sailing breaks for NLSA members (youth and adults), and school, youth and community groups
from North London and further afield.
There is accommodation for 18, and the fleet of Wayfarers, Lasers
and rescue craft is available to rent to groups with suitably qualified leaders. The
accommodation alone may also be hired to groups for fieldwork, environmental studies and
other educational purposes when not required for sailing.
