digharbourcom.gif (78744 bytes)Brightlingsea harbour is managed by the Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners under the Constitution of the Brightlingsea Harbour Revision Order 2002.
The Harbour Master heads the team which runs the day to day activity within the Harbour where the facilities have been steadily upgraded over recent years,  It can now accommodate nearly 500 boats varying in size from around 14 to 40 feet. Visitors are made very welcome by the staff and can number nearly 100 boats over a weekend.
A water taxi offers an excellent service for those wishing to go ashore and explore the town, and the Colne Yacht Club makes visiting yachtsmen welcome.

Skippers Information

The Harbour Office
Situated on the waterside close to the Town Hard, is open weekdays between 0900 hrs and 1300 hrs. It is advisable to make an appointment outside these hours as attendance is dependent on the level of activity in the Harbour.   Staff can usually be contacted on V.H.F Channel 68 or any message can be left on the answerphone on 01206 302200.
Navigation
The approach to Brightlingsea Harbour is made from the deep-water channel in the River Colne; stand well off Colne Buoy No.13. Keep the Brightlingsea Spit close alongside to port and pick up the Leading Light/Boards Brg. 041º(T). There is approximately 1 metre of water at Low Water Springs with the channel deepening in the creek. Deeper water is to be found on the South side of the channel as you pass between the Green and Red buoys; head then towards the Fishermen’s Pontoon, which should be left close to starboard.
Visitors Berths and Moorings
These are to be found in the south channel just upstream of the fishing boats. Usually there will be a member of the Harbour Staff available to direct visitors to vacant berths on the pontoons. Please call on V.H.F. Channel 68 when approaching.
There is an understanding within the Harbour that our regular berth holders leave a notice when they vacate, to indicate whether they will return that day. A berth without a 'Back Tonight' notice is usually available for use, but please do not leave your vessel unattended until you confirm this fact.
Individual Visitors berths cannot be booked. Groups of 6 or more yachts can be booked by contacting the Harbour Office on 01206 302200.
Tidal Streams of up to 2 knots can be experienced during Spring tides and yachts should make due allowance when attempting to berth or turn in areas restricted by moorings.
Speed Limits
4 Knots is the maximum permitted speed anywhere within the Harbour and this is strictly administered. There is however a ski zone situated upstream in the North Channel, for use by members of the Brightlingsea Water-ski & Powerboat Club only, Jet skis and wet bikes are not permitted to use this area.
Anchoring
This is prohibited anywhere in the Harbour due to the frequent passage of commercial vessels. Many ground chains also exist and these are easily fouled. There is good anchorage, outside the Harbour, in the River Colne or the Pyefleet Channel for those visitors wishing to lie at anchor.
Visitors - Overnight Mooring Charges
All vessels staying overnight will be charged Harbour Dues at the following rates;
Vessels 36’ and over £8.00 per night  + £1.00 per metre over 45’
Vessels 26’ to 36’ £7.00 per night
Small vessels and visiting clubs £6.00 per night
Short Stay – free of charge at the Harbourmaster’s discretion. All dues will be collected in the evening or early morning.
Public Landing
Landing is possible on the Town Hard, but visiting yachtsmen may use the Colne Yacht Club Jetty, although no mooring is permitted on the end of the hammerhead. Visitors making use of the club jetty, water, showers and toilets are also most welcome to use the bar and catering facilities.
Good landing can also be found on St. Osyth Stone, but there are no securing points for dinghies.
Jon’s Water Taxi is available from Easter to October, at weekends, from Friday afternoon to Sunday night; all week during the school summer holiday; and at other times by special arrangements. Contact him on Channel 37 or Mobile Telephone No. 07733 078 503
The Harbour operates a limited taxi service during working hours when Jon is not operating.
Town Hard
Scrubbing posts are available by arrangement with the Hard Master on 01206 303535, or at the Hard Office. Waste and rubbish disposal facilities are to be found at the top of the Colne Yacht Club jetty, in the Council Boat Park. This the only place that rubbish should be deposited, Dirty engine oil may be emptied into the Council Boat Park waste oil tank – the key is held in the Harbour Office.
Alongside Drying Berths
These are available at Brightlingsea Boatyard in the North Channel, Telephone 01255 821211 and at St. Osyth Boatyard, telephone 01255 820005.
