Brightlingsea has a wide range of leisure
activities form gentle walks to boating and swimming, By virtue of its coastal position,
much of Brightlingsea's attraction is to be found on the waterfront that runs alongside
Brightlingsea Creek to the mouth of the River Colne.

The Hard is a good place to start and many people like to watch a
wide variety of boats being launched while children traditionally go 'crabbing' with lines
from the causeway. A little further on the Western Promenade starts, This can be
reached either from Oyster Tank Road or from Promenade Way which runs parallel. The
prom is a favourite place for holiday makers with its beach and beach huts, It winds its
way from the Sailing Club at one end to Batemans Tower at the other.

On the promenade two of Brightlingsea's best know facilities can be
found, The boating lake is open during the spring and summer months and boats can be hire
for a small fee, The water is shallow and attendants are always on hand,
Next to the boating lake is the open air swimming pool, Once a salt water pool, this is
now a two level freshwater facility, Parents can safely leave young children the the
shallow paddling pool while the more experienced swimmer can enjoy the deeper waters of
the main pool. One again, attendants are always on hand.
The paddling pool at the far end of
the promenade is growing in popularity, Feb by tidal waters, it is an ideal spot for
toddlers who love to play in the sand that surrounds the pool. There is a small pier
jutting out a little further on and many enjoy catching the sun and sea breezes in the
shadow of Batman's Tower.
Brightlingsea is a quiet place without the arcades and noisy
distractions of the big resorts. There are two formal recreation grounds off regent road
and Lower Park Road which are open all year round during daylight hours. There are many
delightful walks along footpaths all round Brightlingsea and maps of these walks are
available from shops in the town.
