SPRINGMEAD GARDEN RESTORATION PROJECT

With the enthusiastic help of the 3rd Brightlingsea Girl Guides we
created 2.5 tonnes of wood chippings from Christmas trees re-cycled on a cold and frosty
January weekend at Springmead. Together with
the Springmead house Captain Arthur Wenlock bequeathed this wonderful but neglected garden
to the people of Brightlingsea in 1927.
An In Bloom offshoot, The Friends of Springmead,
have successfully applied to the Countryside Agency and the East of England Development
Agency for grants to provide the necessary funding to enable a major restoration to be
carried out to create a quiet public garden for all to enjoy.

Within the grounds a spring still rises and
flows down through the town to feed our nationally protected Site of Special Scientific
Interest. (Hence Springmead, Spring Chase and
Spring Road.) The spring was once the water
supply for the inhabitants of a Roman villa that lay just outside the Springmead boundary.

THE BLOOMIN DONT STOP!
Spring is just around the corner and the bulb
planting that Bloomers undertook last autumn is already starting to provide carpets of
colour to herald spring and lift the heart!

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN
If you have time to spare, need some exercise,
would like to meet new friends, COME AND JOIN THE BLOOMERS! No gardening experience necessary, sense of
humour vital.

HELP US GO FOR GOLD!
