The History of Brightlingsea In Bloom
Late in 1994, Val Gilders invited a group of people from Brightlingsea
Garden Club and Brightlingsea Horticultural Society to her home to try to provide some
floral displays in support of the Committee staging the largest function ever seen in
Brightlingsea. This was to commemorate 50 years of peace, namely "Golden Victory
Day" with land, sea and air displays on Promenade Way. The Group was formed in direct
response to events taking place at the time, which could have put our "Golden Victory
Day" celebrations in jeopardy.
Thus, Brightlingsea In Bloom was formed. Having no money, but frantic fund-raising taking
place, the decision to use boats for floral displays was based more on money, or the lack
of it, than maritime! These have now become our "trademark" and, in fact,
incorporated in our logo.

Funds were raised, tubs, flowerbeds and displays were created. From the
initial eight 'bloomers', support both with financial and voluntary help has gone from
strength to strength.

In 1996, a Bowser was acquired, which has over the years been improved and
upgraded and is now self-filling and manned five days a week, twice a day, by our
dedicated band. Specialised containers for lamp posts and street decoration have been
increased year on year. Our centrepiece, the Costermongers Cart, donated by the Carnival
Association, takes pride of place in the centre of Town.
The financial support continues through the wonderful generosity of our Residents,
Businesses, Organisations and our 'band of helpers' grows each year.
Long may it last!

Brightlingsea In Bloom in partnership with the Colne Community School have created in this Year 2000, a 3D badge planted lighthouse to recognise the long and distinguished history of the Corporation of Trinity House London.
The Colne Community School created the framework in their Technology Department.
As with our Lifeboatman in 1999, many thousand plants were used, namely 1,600 Pyrethrum Golden Moss, 500 Sedum and 1,700 Alternanthera, which were planted for Brightlingsea In Bloom by Birchwood Nursery, Ardleigh.
A dedicated team of volunteers carried out maintenance and watering
